And The Winner is.....
“….. Syd--de-neey… “....
Those were the words of ex-IOC head João Havelange over the Large projection TVs at Sydney’s Darling Harbour…. Reports said half a million people were out in the harbour that night awaiting the announcement… I was one of them… right after the announcement there were fireworks, everyone was hugging everybody else, I must have hugged close to 50 people…. the feeling was awesome, a sports mad city winning the Olympic bid… I felt at home…. I felt like an Australian (i.e. sports mad, laid back, beer/wine drinker)
We fast forward 12 years to 2005, an announcement will be made on my little island neighbour of Singapore by the IOC tonight…. the hosts of the 2012 Summer Olympics will be announced…. The finalists are London, Paris, New York, Madrid and Moscow.
The line up sounds like the who’s-who of the fashion world… not sporting world. I just hope the people in the winning city will embrace the Olympics like Sydney and Beijing…. I doubt it will be at the same level as the Sydney & Beijing but hopefully close… It would be a shame to see the biggest multi-sporting event in the world have little support from the locals…
Also these are some of the most expensive cities in the world. The Olympics is supposed to bring the world together but how many people/fans can actually afford spending up to 2 weeks in the cities??
Just my 2-cents worth… Anyway, I just hope the next Olympics will go to South Africa….
ps: I still have no motivation to work.... hence, this entry during office hours.... Anyone have any jobs in the sporting industry????????
